There are two main types of maritime transport operations: liner shipping and chartering shipping. Liner shipping is also known as scheduled shipping, while chartering shipping is known as irregular shipping.

Liner Shipping: Liner shipping refers to a mode of transport where vessels regularly and repeatedly sail between specific routes and predetermined ports according to a pre-established schedule to transport goods and charge freight rates according to a pre-published rate schedule. Its service targets a large number of non-specific, dispersed cargo owners, and liner companies function as public carriers.

Chartering Shipping: Chartering refers to a method where a charterer leases a vessel from a shipowner for cargo transport, typically applicable to bulk cargo transport. The route and ports, the type of cargo transported, and the sailing time are all confirmed by the shipowner according to the charterer's requirements. The rights and obligations between the charterer and the shipowner are determined by the charter party's charter contract.
